Hello, first of all, thank you for a really good program.

My question: Is it possible to display a symbolic expression a a different form. For example, I have a transfer function in factored form, but I would like it expanded so that I can easily find the various coefficients of s, s^2, ... etc.

Is there a way to do this? (probably a noob question?)

Using 0.95

sorry to bump an ancient topic but this would be reaaaaallllyyy handy.

For example (-1+λ)*(1+λ)+5 --> = (-1+λ)*(1+λ)+5. I can't find any way to make it perform the multiplication and end up with λ^2 + 4.

Any Ideas?

You can use SMath Studio with Maxima (see signature for download link)

Edit:

Still having issues. I can't prevent max from factoring.
if I change the example to (-2+λ)*(1+λ)+5 --> 3+λ*(-1+λ)

I've tried expand, multthru ...ect without luck. Attempting to get λ^2 -3*λ +λ

Sometime Maxima-results are modified by SMath's simplifier. If you set optimization->None then you get the original Maxima answer.

Maxima(expandwrt((-2+λ)*(1+λ)+5,λ))=λ^2-λ+3
