When I try to use the list operations according to the handbook I can't seem to get this to work. See attaches pictures. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

There might be 2 common answers: - you aren't using the evaluate operator = or CTRL+. or from the buttons in the Arithmetic toolbox:
- you are using the subscript symbol (decimal symbol) instead of the element function available with [ or el( or from the buttons in the Matrices toolbox:
for what I can see from your screenshot, my guess is that you are in the 2nd case Edited by user 26 October 2017 01:43:49(UTC)
