Thanks to alyles for setting it up!

Here is a youtube video that goes over the basics -

Would people be interested in an IRC or Discord or similar channel?

There are times I wish I could chit chat about syntax or equations or the like with others.

Chat to me is different than forum posts - it can be more real time and interactive. And you can leave a post and people can reply to it too.

freenode is easy to start a channel.

I like Discord better than slack because messages don't age out, but it seems to be preferred over Slack.

What I understand: you are proposing a personalized interchange between
Smath volunteers. Nothing wrong wrt confidentiality. What could be so
confidential in Edu/Engineering/Scientific works ?
Freeware Smath, planet wide, for private use ... are you suggesting that
new users aren't worth help from a larger Community ?
Why not join the developers group ?
In 2003, Mathsoft invited 25 "Power Users" [their expression] to design
and develop DAEP, I was one of the 25 invited. Mathsoft created a special
interchange between the 25 + Mathsoft themselves, that was fine.
In term of applied maths and general Smath help/support and universal
sharing knowledge, I see no use for what you call Discord channel.
Did you read the numerical accuracy quiz I posted last two days ?
Many readers, no reply because no answer ... what from Discord channel ?
I may be too simplistic to the point I open my e-mail box once a year.
However, I'm not cheap in the Smath Community.
Knowledge is/was associative for so long. Are you suggesting it should be
switched to restrictive/illuminaties rather than associative ?

Cheers ... Jean.

Hi Jean,

I just want to clarify a couple things in your comment. The Discord channel is welcome to anyone who would like to join, but I also understand that not everyone may be interested. I'm not sure what you mean by confidential. There isn't anything that is necessarily confidential other than you aren't required to make an account and could choose a random/anonymous username. Anyone who joins the channel can see the entire history of the chats between users.

It's meant to be a more real-time, less formal, collaboration tool. It is not the intent to replace the official SMath forum at all. In fact much of the conversations revolve around posts within the forum, pointing people to posts that have already been made, or things like simple syntax questions. Admittedly, there's only about 3-4 of us that use the channel regularly, but personally I've found it useful. For example, the path picker region is a result of a conversation started in the Discord channel. I was also able to help Davide in real time with testing some of the development versions of the region.

I think the forums are still the best place to disseminate information. If you'll allow me a bad analogy... I see the SMath users here as co-workers. The forums are our workplace, and the discord channel is the pub.

Best,
Alyles

Several answers that really make the Earth, annoying flat.
