As a new user, I note that there are no units for torque, such as ft-kips, or kN-m.
Is there a way that a user can add new units?

Yes, user can define new units. Read the Tutorial and Examples on Wiki, please. In this case, just use 'kip*'ft or 'kN*'m instead of given 'J in the result.
